This book is an essay in pictures. It is the story
of one year at St. Leo College. The college
has attained a new awareness of its sin-
gularly unique ability to reach out for what is
seemingly impossible— to reach out and to
grasp its desire to excel as it encompasses
and broadens our world of academic, religi-
ous and social patterns.
In keeping with this goal of the college, the
theme of this yearbook is The impossible
Dream: its purpose being to stress the em-
phasis we have placed on achieving our in-
dividual aspirations.

As we walk, contemplating the new-
ness of the day, we realize that we
are part of an unchanging pattern-
striving and reaching for goals often
elusive to our grasp.

Happiness comes from the capacity to
feel deeply, to enjoy simply, to think
freely, to risk life and to be needed.
ST
Peaceful hearts find joy in simple
beauties— dew and early morn bring
them that lightness of spirit denied to
those who blindly rush and refuse to
appreciate.
14
Men grow when inspired by a high
purpose and when contemplating
vast horizons.
Not until a soul has outlived its privi-
lege of springtime and sprightliness,
does it become worn and heavy.

In Memoriam
Quietly the night flows beyond the voice of brass,
into a different time of recognition—
a quick and awful time of ourselves together-
strangers— with the tune of the wind
searing our bodies— in glory and despair,
our passion roars to the volume of the
music
whipping the movement of the water and
the shaking shore,
flowing, searching . . . desiring . . . tearing
at the ancient monuments of the deep roots,
demanding strength from the existence
found and sought eternally
where you and I live together lost in our
world together ... in our union of figment
of you and I together,
of our love and belief and our minds, our
bodies, whipping 'round the earth until the
me of peace brings us to our hearth.

Bishop McLaughlin
Guides
The Most Reverend Charles McLaughlin, Bishop of
St. Petersburg, celebrated the Baccalaureate Mass
and delivered the Baccalaureate address to the
Senior Class on Saturday, April 26, 1969.
The Bishop, as the spiritual leader of the diocese,
stressed the need for sufficient guidance and un-
derstanding of the people of the church in a con-
temporary society.
The College granted, honoris causa, a Doctorate of
Laws to the Bishop at the Commencement cere-
monies which followed.

Defense Secretary Laird Supports
m
The arrival of the Secre-
tary of Defense was the
most exciting event that
a young college such as
St. Leo has experienced.
The Secretary delivered
the Commencement Ad-
dress to the Senior Class
and gave every indica-
tion of his support to
the newly degreed stu-
dents.
The College granted,
honoris causa, a Doctor-
ate of Humane Letters
to the Secretary.

Having the College's support and two fine coach-
es, the tennis team banded together for an ex-
citing athletic team at St. Leo. The cosmopolitan
aspect of the team and a mutual love for the game
closely united the players. They were a rare group
of athletes working together and playing hard,
communicating and understanding and represent-
ing athletics at its finest.

There is a season for everything, a time for every occupation under heaven:
A time for giving birth
a time for dying;
a time for planting
a time for uprooting what has been planted.
A time for killing
a time for healing;
a time for knocking down,
a time for building.
A time for tears,
a time for laughter;
a time for mourning,
a time for dancing.
A time for throwing stones away,
a time for gathering them up;
a time for embracing,
a time to refrain from embracing.
A time for searching,
a time for losing;
a time for keeping,
a time for throwing away.
162
A time for tearing,
a time for sewing;
a time for keeping silent,
a time for speaking.
A time for loving
a time for hating;
a time for war,
a time for peace.
What does a man gain for the efforts that he makes? I contemplate
the task that God gives mankind to labour at. All that he does is apt
for its time,- but though he has permitted man to consider time in its
wholeness, man cannot comprehend the work of God from beginning
to end. I know there is no happiness for man except in pleasure and
enjoyment while he lives. And when man eats and drinks and finds
happiness in his work, this is a gift from God. I know that what God
does he does consistently. To this nothing can be added, from this noth-
ing taken away . . .
Book of Ecclesiastes, 3:1-14

Epilogue
The life and spirit of Saint Leo College has been
depicted through a pictorial essay. Our staff has at-
tempted to present an imaginative approach to view
the College as it sets our patterns of life. The lyricist
who composed the words of our theme tells best our
effort to portray the life-force, now and in the future,
behind Saint Leo College.
164
To dream the impossible dream
To fight the unbeatable foe
To bear with unbearable sorrow
To run where the brave dare not go
To right the unrightable wrong
To love pure and chaste from afar
To strive when your arms are too
weary
To reach the unreachable star
This is my quest
To follow that star . . .
165

. . . no matter how hopeless
no matter how far
To fight for the right without question
or pause
To be willing to march into hell for a
heavenly cause
And I know, if I'll only be true to this
glorious quest
That my heart will lie peaceful and calm
When I'm laid to my rest . . .
